Japanese composer Yuri Umemoto’s new opera, “crypt_”, was world-premiered at the Munich Biennale, Germany on May 16th, 17th, and 18th 2026.

Commissioned by the Munich Biennale, “crypt_” has been co-produced by the Munich Biennale, Ultima Oslo Contemporary Music Festival, Oslo Sinfonietta, Black Box teater Oslo, and the KLANG Festival Kopenhagen. It is an autobiographical opera created by Yuri Umemoto on a libretto by Gareth Mattey.

Reports on the world premiere with some stage photos have appeared in the prominent German theater magazine “Die Deutsche Bühne” and the renowned German opera/operetta magazine “Orpheus”, among others.

Currently, Umemoto has been active in Germany as a resident fellow at the Akademie Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart for 2026.
