Japan’s world-renowned record magazine Record Geijutsu announced that the Grand Prize of its 1st New Record Academy Award was bestowed on Shunske Sato and Shuann Chai for their 2024 duet album, Beethoven: The Complete Violin Sonatas (Cobra Records).
The album was also given the award for Best Chamber/Instrumental Recording.
This boundary-challenging recording of Beethoven’s complete Sonatas for Piano and Violin features the acclaimed duo: Shunske Sato (violin) and Shuann Chai (fortepiano). The Kreutzer Sonata was the very first piece they played together long before they got married.
How far can you push Beethoven’s music? What’s the breaking point? Is there one?
With the present recording, the two performers delve into this wonderful world of emotionality and arresting drama, inspired by the wealth of writings by and about Beethoven. Embracing historical sources and performance practices, they seek to inhabit and unleash the magic and message that these sonatas, even after two centuries, can move us with.
