Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, Spain has announced Jonathan Nott as its next Music Director. Nott will begin an initial five-year tenure as Music Director in September 2026.
An absolute benchmark in orchestral conducting, Nott displays a musical vision that crosses eras, aesthetics and emotions, always in search of a profound expressive truth. The Liceu opens its doors to Jonathan Nott, reaffirming his commitment to musical excellence as one of the most outstanding conductors on the international scene. With a powerful artistic personality, a great commitment to his time and an open and transformative vision of music, Nott begins a new era at the Liceu that promises excitement and new perspectives.
Jonathan Nott, who is Music Director of the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra and Musical and Artistic Director of the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, was the driving force behind the prestigious Gustav Mahler Conducting Competition and was principal conductor of the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra.
“It is both an honour and a privilege to accept this appointment. Since childhood I have felt a profound connection to the world of singing and opera, and every time I have had the opportunity to conduct in Barcelona, I have experienced an extraordinary bond with its audience.
Just two weeks ago, I attended a performance of Dvořák’s Rusalka at the Liceu, masterfully performed by its exceptional orchestra and choir under the direction of Josep Pons. The synergy among the musicians and the vitality they conveyed were truly inspiring.
To be invited to assume the musical direction of the Gran Teatre del Liceu is an honour and a responsibility that I embrace with great enthusiasm. I very much look forward to joining this remarkable institution at the beginning of the 2026-2027 season and embarking on a rich and inspiring artistic journey together.” Jonathan Nott
