Makoto Yoshida
Studied piano from the age of 5, clarinet from the age of 15 and conducting from the age of 22 under Maestro Seiji Ozawa.Graduated at the Conservatoire de Rueil-Malmaison in France with the unanimous Grand Prix and virtuoso prize from the jury, and studied under Florent Heau.
He was sent by the Agency for Japanese Cultural Affairs to study at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris, where, he studied under Michel Arignon and Pascal Moragues. At the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Geneve, he studied with Romain Guyot.
He was specially awarded the Michel Arrignon Special Prize at the 19th buffetcrampon music lecture. He won the first prize in the woodwind section and the audience prize at the 5th Tokyo Music Competition. In 2012, he was awarded the Richard Stoltzmann Prize at Music Weeks in TOKYO 2012 .In 2014 he was selected as soloist for the ‘Toyota Master Players, Vienna’. Participated in a national tour. Recorded and performed Krommer: Concerto for two clarinets with maestro Peter Schmiedl. In 2016 he made his debut at the Suntory Hall Chamber Music Garden, where he received rave reviews for his performance of Messiaen: Quatour pour la fin du temps. At the same festival he also conducted Britten: Serenade, Op.31, with John Ken Nuzzo and Radek Baborak as soloists. In 2017, he successfully completed a European recital tour in an attempt to recreate a private premiere programme of Brahms’ clarinet sonatas.
In 2018 he made his debut at the Wigmore Hall in London. In 2019, he will perform Brahms: Clarinet Quintet with the Küchl Quartet. The performance received great acclaim in music journals and newspaper reviews. In the same year, he performed with the Trio Owon led by Olivier Charlier, toured with the Sitkovetsky Trio and gave a series of international chamber music performances in France, Germany and Austria. In 2000, he gave the world premiere of Turtle Totem, a new solo clarinet piece by composer Dai Fujikura. For the NHK TVprogramme “the calture of Japan”, he conducted the recording of the new theme music for the programme.
He has actively tried to collaborate with traditional Japanese instruments, and his duo with the grand master shakuhachi player Fujiwara Dozan has been particularly well received, winning awards. His debut CD ‘Brahms: Clarinet Sonatas (complete works), Schumann: Fantasy Pieces and others’ was released worldwide by Sony Music. In 2022, he participated in a project organised by Suntory Hall to mark the 25th anniversary of the death of Toru Takemitsu.
His performance of Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto with basset clarinet was particularly well received. His performance of the Orchestra Ensemble Kanazawa conducted by Hubert Soudant at their subscription concerts was highly acclaimed.
From June 2022, he is the producer of the ‘Salon Concerts’ at the Watabun in Kyoto, and from November, the artistic supervisor of the musical project at Mii Temple, which has a history of over 1,300 years.(Jan 2023).
