Masuko Ushioda, Violin
Following her studies at the Toho Gakuen School of Music in Tokyo, Masuko Ushioda went on to study at the Leningrad Conservatory in the Soviet Union and worked with Joseph Szigeti in Switzerland. Szigeti said of her “it is the sense of style, the musical intelligence, the sincerity of her impulse, the individuality of her lovely tone that sets her apart.” She went on to be a laureate in the 1963 Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels, Belgium and upon winning first prize at the Tchaikovsky Competition in 1966, the critics acclaimed her as “the greatest new talent, an artist of exceptional lyricism.”

Ms. Ushioda has played with major orchestras around the world including the New York Philharmonic, Philhadelphia Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, National Symphony (Washington, D. C.), Chicago Symphony, Boston Symphony, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Berlin Philharmonic, London Symphony, London Philharmonic, French ORTF and the NHK Symphony Orchestra. She has performed with every major Japanese orchestra, including frequent tours with the most prestigous of them. In addition to recitals in the major cities of North America and Europe, she has made several tours of the Soviet Union and South America and has performed frequently at the most important chamber music festivals, including Marlboro, Spoleto, Charleston, Santa Fe and La Jolla.

A frequent collaborator in recent seasons with Seiji Ozawa at the Saito Kinen Festival in Japan, of which she is concertmaster, Ms. Ushioda is also a leader of the Mito Chamber Orchestra in Japan. She has recorded numerous chamber and orchestral works for the Philips and Sony labels with these ensembles.

Born in Manchuria of Japanese parents, Ms. Ushioda now lives in Boston, where she teaches a group of exceptionally gifted young violinists at the New England Conservatory of Music. Her discography for Fontec includes the complete Ysaÿe solo sonatas as well as a highly-acclaimed recent recording of the complete solo Sonatas and Partitas by J. S. Bach. She plays on a 1690 Stradivarius.
