Masahiro Arita received his musical training at the Toho Gakuen School of Music, the Royal Conservatory of Music in Brussels, where he studied flauto traverso under Barthold Kuijken and graduated with the premier prix, and at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Hague, gaining his Soloist Diploma with Supreme Honors in 1977. Whilst still a student, he won first prize at several prestigious competitions including the Mainichi Music Competition in 1972 and in the flauto traverso category at the Bruges International Music Competition.
Mr. Arita quickly gained the reputation as one of the world's foremost
performers of the flauto traverso, appearing regularly as soloist with
many orchestras, including Frans Brüggen's Orchestra of the 18th Century
and Trevor Pinnock's The English Consort. He has performed in chamber music
recitals with Trevor Pinnock and Rachel Podger during their tours of Japan.
In 2001, Mr. Arita's recitals at the National Flute Association Convention
were received with enormous enthusiasm. In the summer of 2002, he returned
to the Bruges International Music Competition to participate as a jury
member.
Masahiro Arita's recording entitled Flute Music of the German Baroque was awarded the ‘Art Work Prize of the Agency for Cultural Affairs' and two Record Academy prizes in separate categories. He received his second Art Work Prize of the Agency for Cultural Affairs for his recording of music by Telemann.
Masahiro Arita teaches in the Department of Early Music at the Toho Gakuen School of Music, works as a Flute Professor at the Showa College of Music, and conducts the Tokyo Bach-Mozart Orchestra, which he founded in 1989.
He was presented with the Suntory Music Prize in 1990.
