Emotional power, musical sensitivity, flawless technique, and a tone remarkable for its haunting beauty are the qualities that have established Kyoko Takezawa as one of today's foremost violinists. Her musicianship and virtuosity have made her a commanding presence on the world's concert platforms.
Highlights of the current season include performances of the Sibelius concerto with the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra and recitals in Kyoto, Fujisawa and at Tokyo's Suntory Hall. Her European appearances this season include the Brahms concerto with the Halle, a tour with the Hamburg NDR under Alan Gilbert, the Berg concerto with the Aarhus Symphony and an Italian recital tour, while her US engagements include return visits to the Jacksonville Symphony and Vancouver Symphony Orchestras.
Ms. Takezawa has recently appeared at the Aspen and the La Jolla Music Festivals and given performances with the Seattle, Charlotte, San Francisco, Vancouver, Montreal and Toronto Symphony Orchestras, with the Orchestre National de Lille, at the London Proms (playing the dazzling Szymanowski Violin Concerto No.1), the Royal Scottish National, the Bournemouth Symphony, the Swedish Radio Symphony, the Monte Carlo and the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestras. She has been heard in recital at the Wigmore Hall in London, in Germany, Italy and throughout Japan.
Ms. Takezawa has performed as soloist with many of the world's leading orchestras including the New York Philharmonic, Boston Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra, Chicago Symphony, London Symphony, Dresden Staatskapelle, Leipzig Gewandhaus, NHK Symphony, and the New Japan Philharmonic. She has collaborated with, among others, Seiji Ozawa, Sir Colin Davis, Michael Tilson Thomas, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Kurt Masur, Sir Neville Marriner, Leonard Slatkin, Charles Dutoit, Andrew Davis and Tadaaki Otaka.
A prolific recording artist, Ms. Takezawa can be heard on BMG's RCA Victor Red Seal label. Her most recent recording is a recital disc including works by Dvorak, Brahms and Kreisler. Ms. Takezawa's other acclaimed BMG recordings include the Elgar Violin Concerto with Sir Colin Davis and the Bavarian Radio Symphony; Barber's Violin Concerto with Leonard Slatkin and the Saint Louis Symphony; Bartok's Second Violin Concerto with Michael Tilson Thomas and the London Symphony; and the two Mendelssohn violin concertos with Klaus Peter Flor and the Bamberg Symphony.
Ms. Takezawa began violin studies at the age of three and at seven toured the United States and Canada with the Suzuki Method Association. At 17, she began studying with the celebrated violin pedagogue Dorothy DeLay and graduated from the Juilliard School in 1989. In 1986 she received the Gold Medal at the Second Quadrennial International Violin Competition in Indianapolis and, most recently, the Idemitsu Award for outstanding musicianship. As a former winner, she has served as a juror at the Indianapolis Violin Competition and the 2004 Menuhin Competition in London.
Ms. Takezawa lives in New York and plays the 1710 Stradavarius “Camposelice” on loan from the Nippon Music Foundation.
