Kazushi Ono is in his fourth season as Music Director of La Monnaie, the Royal Opera House of Belgium, having succeeded Antonio Pappano in 2002. Called ‘the fortune of the Monnaie’ by Le Monde de la Musique, he is attracting attention throughout Europe as one of the most exciting lyric and symphonic conductors.
His debut production of Strauss's Electra was described by the Suddeutsche
Zeitung as "the miracle of Brussels" and since then critically
acclaimed productions have included Mozart Don Giovanni, Britten Peter
Grimes, Wagner Tannhauser, Verdi Aida and Strauss Die Frau ohne Schatten
amongst others. He has also conducted several world premières including
Ballata by Luca Francesconi, Hanjo by Toshio Hosokawa at the Aix-en-Provence
Festival and Julie by Philippe Boesmans.
In Spring 2005 Mr. Ono made his opera debut in Paris conducting The Bassarids
by Henze at the Théâtre du Châtelet, a performance described
by Le Monde de la Musique as having "a command and sense of theatre
that recalled the great moments of Claudio Abbado." The achievement
was all the more remarkable as the orchestral parts were played on three
pianos in a transcription made by the conductor at the last minute. Later
in the year, Mr. Ono and La Monnaie gave their first Japanese tour with
Don Giovanni and two symphonic programmes and on returning to Europe in
October to make his debut at La Scala Milan, opening their season with
3 performances of Mahler Symphony No 7. He returned to La Scala in May
06 for another symphonic programme and makes his operatic debut there next
season with Shostakovich Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk. This summer he gives
his first BBC Prom in London with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales.
Future plans include performances of operas by R. Strauss at the Deutsche
Oper Berlin in the 2008/9 and 2009/10 seasons, engagements that follow
his highly successful debut conducting Tannhauser in March 2006.
Kazushi Ono has conducted almost all Wagner's operas, notably the complete Ring cycle at the Badisches Staatstheater of Karlsruhe, where he was Music Director from 1996 - 2002. He has also conducted Strauss Salome at the Berlin Staatsoper and Mozart Magic Flute at the Bologne Opera. With the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, where his tenure as Music Director lasted from 1992 - 1996, he launched the award-winning Opera in Concert Form Series, giving the Japanese premieres of many 20th century operas.
Mr. Ono also appears as guest conductor with many well-known orchestras including the Israel Philharmonic, Boston Philharmonic, Leipzig Gewandhaus, Ensemble InterContemporain, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, and his work with radio orchestras includes concerts Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France both in Paris each season and on tour, Vienna Radio Symphony at the Musikverein, BBC Symphony, BBC Philharmonic and BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Danish Radio, Finnish Radio, RAI Turin and German radio orchestras (Hamburg, Stuttgart, Frankfurt and Cologne).
His discography with the Orchestra of La Monnaie includes Mahler Symphony No 2 and works by Mark-Anthony Turnage, Wolfgang Rihm and George Benjamin for Warner Classics, the complete Prokofiev Piano Concerti with El Basha (Musica Libera) and Julie by Philippe Boesmans (Cypris). Mr. Ono received the 1st Watanabe Akeo Music foundation Music Award in 1993 and in June 2006 was awarded the "Grand Prix" by the Syndicat de la critique Francaise de Theatre, de Musique et de Danse for his production of Julie by Boesmans and the "Prix de l'Europe francophone" for his production of Boris Godounov by Mussorgsky, both productions with La Monnaie.
