Before turning to conducting in 1972 Christoph Eschenbach could already look back on an international career as a pianist. He was born in Breslau and received his first piano lessons from his mother, going on to study with Eliza Hansen in Hamburg, where he also studied conducting with Wilhelm Brückner-Rüggeberg.
Christoph Eschenbach now appears with all the major European and American orchestras.
Between 1988 and 1999 he was principal conductor of the Houston Symphony Orchestra and went on to become their honorary conductor. Before that he was artistic and musical director of the Zürich Tonhalle Orchester and principal guest conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
Christoph Eschenbach took up the post of principal conductor of the NDR-Symphony Orchesra in 1998. In 2000 he was appointed principal conductor of the Orchestre de Paris. From 2003 onwards he will hold the post of principal conductor of the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra.
Since his opera debut in 1978 Christoph Eschenbach has been a regular guest in the major opera houses. His appearances at the Houston Grand Opera conducting "Don Giovanni", "Cosi fan tutte", "The Marriage of Figaro", "Elektra" and, in a production directed by Robert Wilson, "Parsifal" and "Lohengrin" were exceptionally successful. Last year he made his first guest appearance in Bayreuth.
Christoph Eschenbach is a welcome guest at the leading American and European festivals - Tanglewood, Hollywood Bowl, Tours and the Schleswig-Holstein music festival. He has been Music Director of the Ravinia Festival since 1995 and became Artistic Director of the Schleswig-Holstein music festival in 1999.
In collaboration with the foremost classical music labels Christoph Eschenbach has made over 65 recordings as a conductor and/or pianist. The composer's recorded include Bach, Brahms, Berlioz, Grieg, Mahler, Mendelssohn, Messiaen, Sain-Saens, Strauss and Tchaikovsky. Works by contemporary composers such as Berg, Webern, Schönberg, Schnittke, Lourie, Picker, Rouse, Glass, Adams and Pintscher are also to be found among his highly regarded recordings.
In 1990 Christoph Eschenbach was awarded the Medal of Honour (Bundesverdienstkreuz) for his exceptional achievements as a pianist and as a conductor by the German president Richard von Weizsäcker. In the same year he received the annually awarded "Leonard Bernstein Prize"
