Chieko Teratani, Mezzo-soprano
Chieko Teratani graduated from Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music and went on to study under Professor Polo in the Hamburg School of Music between 1977 and 1980. In 1980, she won the second prize at the Hertogenbosch International Song Competition.

Her first professional engagement was in 1981 with the Bremerhaven Stadttheater where she sang, among other roles, Octavian in Der Rosenkavalier, Rosina in The Barber of Seville, Isabella in The Italian in Algiers and Hansel in Humperdinck's fairy tale opera Hansel and Gretel.

In 1983, she joined the Bonn Opera in Germany where she was featured as Siebel in Faust, Annius in La Clemenza di Tito, Bersi in Andrea Chenier, Mercedes in Carmen, Fenena in Nabucco, Orlovsky in Die Fledermaus and Suzuki in Madame Butterfly. During the same period, she made several appearances in the Beethoven Hallé Orchestrafs subscription concerts, performing works such as Beethoven's Symphony No.9, J.S. Bach's B minor Mass, Mozart's Coronation Mass, and Handel's oratorio Jephtha. In 1990, she moved to Hamburg and extended her repertoire to dramatic roles such as Preziosilla in La Forza del Destino, and Eboli in Don Carlos.

Chieko Teratani has also sung as guest artist with numerous European opera houses including those in Hamburg, Frankfurt, Bremen, Freiburg, Strasbourg, Montpellier and Innsbruck. As well as her operatic roles, Miss Teratani has a great love of Oratorio and Lieder, and is know for her wide repertoire that includes Gorecki's Symphony No.3, the premières of which she has performed in the United States, Germany, Japan and the Netherlands.

Acclaimed as one of the countries most outstanding mezzo-sopranos, she has been invited to perform on numerous stages in Japan under the batons of conductors such as Nello Santi, Seiji Ozawa, Jean Fournet, Ondrej Lenard, Eliahu Inbal, Kazushi Ono, Charles Dutoit, Gary Bertini, Gennady Rozhdestvensky, Gerhardt Bosse, Pascal Verrot.
